ANKARA - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday night strongly condemned the Israeli attack on Muslim worshipers recently at the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, Palestine. "We strongly condemn Israel's heinous attack on our first Qibla Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is unfortunately carried out by Israel every Ramadan," Erdogan said in a tweet on Twitter.
Turkish President Erdgoan also expressed his solidarity with the Palestinian people. "As Turkey, we will continue to support our Palestinian brothers in all circumstances," he said. Erdogan also shared the same message in Turkish, Arabic and Hebrew via social media.
Israeli forces fired stun grenades, tear gas and rubber-coated bullets to disperse Muslim worshipers from the al-Aqsa Mosque, the world's third holiest site for Muslims, on Friday night. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 205 people were injured by Israeli forces in the Old City and Sheikh Jarrah areas.
Tensions have risen in the Sheikh Jarrah district recently as Israeli settlers swarmed the area after an Israeli court ordered the eviction of Palestinian families.
Since 1956, a total of 37 Palestinian families have lived in 27 houses in the neighborhood. However, illegal Jewish settlers have tried to push them out under a law approved by the Israeli parliament in 1970.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Zionist
Israel annexed the entire city in 1980, an act never recognized by the
international community.
The West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is viewed as occupied territory
under international law, making all Jewish settlements there illegal.
