Israeli fighter jets also attacked al-Shifa Hospital and the Breij refugee camp.
GAZA Israel intensified its bombardment of Gaza on Friday (27/10/2023) evening, shortly after a UN resolution was passed requiring a ceasefire and opening access to send humanitarian aid to Gaza. The bombardment by Israeli fighter jets and artillery targeted Gaza in the north. An Israeli military spokesman said that Israeli ground forces were trying to "expand the operation". As a result of the bombing last Friday night, a loud explosion rocked near al-Shifa Hospital.
This Israeli attack and bombing was carried out when Gaza
was currently in total darkness, because there was no longer any electricity available for lighting. The Aljazirah news agency reported that apart from the explosion that occurred near al-Shifa Hospital, the Indonesian Hospital and the Breij refugee camp were also not spared from the blast targets.
In the midst of almost complete darkness, with large explosions accompanying Israeli bombs that occasionally roared into the darkness of the night. Meanwhile a near-total communications blackout in Gaza means most of the population there is unable to reach emergency services.
Meanwhile the international medical charity, Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF), said it was "very
concerned about the situation in Gaza".
"We are deeply concerned about the patients, medical staff and thousands of families sheltering at Al Shifa hospital and other health facilities," the group wrote on social media.
"We call for the firm protection of all medical facilities, staff and civilians throughout the Gaza Strip."
Before the attacks and bombings were launched, Israel said that a Hamas bunker was under al-Shifa Hospital. Although Palestinian officials and hospital staff vehemently deny it.
This hospital is the largest hospital in Gaza and is one of the few hospitals that is not operational due to Israeli shelling.
